Ways to Choose a Blush for Your Skin

For most women, the struggle to pick the right blush is unending. With so many amazing shades out there, it sure is a tough job to zero in on the one that suits you the most. But, we are here to tell you that there’s no need to be overwhelmed by it. With some useful tips to choose a blush for your skin, you can easily get natural- and subtle-looking makeup every time.

Finding Your Skin Undertone
What is skin undertone? There are three types of undertones―cool, neutral, or warm. What this means is that an undertone is the color that is underneath your skin. Even though your skin tone may alter over time due to sun exposure, age, pollution, etc., the undertone will remain the same.

There are two tests you can do at home to determine your skin undertone.

1. To do the first test, you need to stand outside where there is direct sunlight. Hold out your arm, palm facing upward, and look at the color of your veins.
2. For the second test, you will require one silver bracelet and one gold bracelet. Now, wear both on either arm to see which one looks better (not your personal preference).

People with cool undertones

1. … have blue or purple veins on their wrists.
2. … look good in silver jewelry rather than gold.

If you have a cool undertone and have a fair skin tone, you should go with a pale pink, plum, apricot, rosy tones, cool to deep peach shades, or even the pink-peach shade. As for women with medium to dark skin tone and cool undertones, amber, rose, and tangerine blush shades are apt.

People with neutral undertones

1. … have blue-green veins on their wrists.
2. … look good in both gold and silver jewelry.

For women with neutral undertones, consider yourselves lucky as every blush shade will suit you. However, pink-peach, coral pink, rosewood, and burgundy shades are more favorable.

People with warm undertones

1. … have green or olive veins on their wrists.
2. … look good in gold jewelry rather than silver.

Medium to dark skin tones with warm undertones look radiant with blush shades that can give it a pop of color. Choose from cool, bright pink, and fuchsia. On the other hand, for women with fair skin and warm undertones, peachy-yellow shade blushes can work wonders.

Applying the Blush
Many women, through no fault of their own, often overlook a simple, yet critical, detail while applying blush―concentrating it only on the cheeks. Blush is mostly applied to create an illusion of a natural, healthy glow. In the following section, we will go over the steps on how to apply cream and powder blush correctly.

Step #1
Take an angled brush, and dip it in the cream blush as gently as you can. Make sure you’re not applying too much pressure, or the brush will accumulate more product unnecessarily.

Step #2
At the back of your hand, blot the loaded brush at least 3 times. This way, you won’t have to worry about getting too much blush on your cheeks.

Step #3
Stand in front of the mirror, and smile as wide as you can to make the apples ‘pop’. With the loaded brush, press and stamp (not smear or sweep) it on each apple.

Step #4
Once the apples are done, do not dip the brush back into the blush. Instead, move towards your temple and eventually, to the edge of your brow bone as you stamp the brush.

Step #5
Now, we will apply the powder blush. Take the round-tip brush, and dip it in the powder blush as gently as you can.

Step #6
To remove excess powder, tap the brush a couple of times over the edge of the container. Now, follow the same technique as mentioned in steps 3―4.

If applying both cream and powder blush is too much for you, choose either of the formulas for your specific skin type―dry or oily skin. Mostly for dry or mature skin, a cream blush is ideal as it gives you a great flush of color without being too obvious. And go with a powder blush as it will have more staying power for oily skin.

Before applying blush, remember to moisturize your skin properly and apply primer for a smooth base. This way, the color will spread evenly on your cheeks, and will give you a natural glow.

Natural Makeup Tips for Black Women

Women of African-American origin or black women often find it difficult to get their makeup right. The trouble starts with the choice of right cosmetic for their skin tones. In the past, not many cosmetic companies specialized in products that were exclusively meant for black women. Therefore, they had to put up with cosmetics that looked unnatural upon them. However, nowadays, there are quite a few companies which cater to the needs of black women.
Natural makeup for black women start with identifying one’s skin undertone. It is not justified to label all black women as ‘women with dark brown skin’, as there are several shades of browns and even beige, which account for ‘dark skin.’ Thus, your first step would be to identify your skin tone and the undertone. Most black women have blue undertone, however, those with lighter skin color may have pink or gold undertone.

Once you get your skin tone right, the next step is to shop for the right cosmetics. Choosing a correct foundation is a basic and one of the most important natural makeup ideas. You need to choose a foundation that perfectly blends with your skin. You have an option of choosing a foundation in the form of liquid, gel, cream or stick. Yellow based foundations look best for black women as they complement the skin undertone.
While applying foundation, make sure you clean your face and moisturize it. Natural makeup techniques involve using your fingers or a cotton swab to apply the foundation in small portions on forehead, cheeks, chin, near your eyes and nose. Now blend it with your skin so that the end result is smooth, even skin. Lastly, take some loose powder on a brush and make quick, sweeping motions to blend the makeup well. Make sure there is no visible boundary where your makeup meets your skin.

Eye Makeup

Black women have a great choice in this area, as they can opt for bold shades like blue, violet and green. However, if you’re getting ready for the day, then stick to neutral shades like copper, brown, pink etc. Keep your eye shadow light, so that it does not look odd for the day. While doing eye makeup for night, you can choose any shade from deep purple, mauve, rich chocolate etc., and can apply it heavily on your eyelids. Complete your eye makeup by a thin eyeliner and 2 – 3 coats of mascara.

This is an area, where you are likely to make a major makeup blunder. Remember, peach, orange, red and pink blushers are not for your skin tone, since they are barely noticeable on dark skin tones. Brown and copper are the colors that complement very well with African-American skin tones. Steer clear of rosy reds, as they look very artificial on black women.

Lip Makeup

Lip gloss is a must-have in your makeup kit, if you are an African-American woman, since it suits you more than a lipstick. Black women tend to have bigger, fuller lips, hence accentuate your lips as much as you can. Line your lips with a lip liner that is close to the shade of your lip gloss or lipstick. Fill the lip color with a brush and blend it well with the lip liner. Many women apply darker lip liners than their lipstick color, which doesn’t look good at all.
Hope the above tips help you look gorgeous and feel good about yourself. For more natural makeup tricks for African-American skin tones, take a closer look at the pictures of divas like Jennifer Lopez or Halle Berry, who have a great makeup sense.

Best Makeup for Acne-prone Skin

How do you feel when you have to attend a party the following day and you get a cluster of painful red bumps on your face? You constantly worry if your makeup will further flare up the acne on your face. You need to consider a lot of things before choosing makeup for your acne prone skin. One of the most important things is to opt for a good oil-free foundation as well as a primer.

Cosmetics for Acne Prone Skin

~ The face cream or the moisturizer you choose must be free from lanolin and isopropyl myristate.
Instead of heavy moisturizers, use serums and light water based lotions that are capable of restoring the moisture balance without letting it dry.

~ The foundation you choose must be non-comedogenic (one that does not clog pores).

~ You can opt for a mineral makeup or liquid makeup containing organic botanical extracts, titanium oxide and zinc oxide with anti bacterial properties.

~ Choose a cleanser specially formulated for acne containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide that are capable of controlling acne.

~ You should never apply cosmetics with dimethicone and bismuth oxychloride as they clog the pores present on your skin.

~ You should never apply astringents, exfoliators, masks and toners containing alcohol on acne.

~ Use a gentle non abrasive cleanser with benzoyl peroxide on your skin.

Now that you have got an idea about the right kind of cosmetics for acne, you can try to cover up the acne and gift yourself a flawless look.

~ Cleanse your face with a mild cleanser (non comedogenic). First rinse with warm water and then splash cool water on your face. Dry your face with a soft towel. This helps to close the pores.

~ Now apply rose water or a gentle non alcoholic toner on your face and neck with a soft cotton. This helps cleansing traces of dirt if left over on your skin after cleaning.

~ Use a water based or oil free moisturizer on your face to avoid the greasy look. You can even mix a few drops of lavender oil or tea tree oil with the moisturizer to soothe your skin.

~ Apply a non greasy concealer on the acne, pimples and spots present on your face. The color of the concealer should match your skin tone.

~ Now dab the desired amount of foundation on your palm and apply evenly all over your face with delicate sliding and sweeping motions. Then blend it perfectly on your face. The foundation should be either oil free, water based, transparent or matte. You can also mix some powder with your foundation for giving a better coverage to the acne.

~ Use a clean makeup brush to apply the blusher on your cheeks. The blusher should also be oil free and mild.

~ Dab either loose or compact powder on your face for a perfect finish. This gives you a neat, oil free and smooth look.

Apart from these, you must also take care of your skin to avoid pimples and acne. You can also use a tinted moisturizer for the base makeup instead of foundation. Always remove all traces of makeup before going to bed.

Keep your Skin Clear and Healthy

From now on, look beautiful we shall, but only by means of the miracles of mother Nature, and more importantly, without breaking the bank. None of us have a clue as to what happened to the tenderness, the glow, and the youthfulness that our skin once had. However, there is one thing I can tell you right in the beginning, start listening to your skin before it stops listening to you. With that said, allow me to help you figure out how to keep your skin healthy and clean so that acne does not break out on the very day you have to go for a party, and you do not have to wage a daily battle against the blemishes on your skin with a gamut of foundations and concealers.

A clear and healthy skin will seem a distant reality if you do not maintain personal hygiene. Washing your face at least twice a day, refusing to share towels, protecting your skin from dirt, etc., are some basic measures you need to follow. In addition, keeping your skin always moisturized, protecting it from the harsh UV rays, and cleansing your it regularly can help you attain that goal of an immaculate skin. While makeup is definitely a mantra to be followed, experimenting should always be minimal, for less is always more when it comes to cosmetics. The most important ways to keep your skin healthy and glowing go as follows:

Drink: Water, Juices, Herbal Teas
The world diets, and they lose the charm and glow their skin once had. We, on the other hand, gain more and more of it, and lose weight too. How? Let me explain. Water is your key to an immaculate skin, for it flushes out all the toxins in your body, and renders glow to your face. The more water you drink, the more quickly it works on your skin by keeping it hydrated. In addition, a glass of fruit juice a day is always an added advantage, because fruits contain vitamins that are highly essential for skin. Make it a habit to drink a glass of orange or apple juice everyday. Not to miss, herbal tea is a globally-acknowledged remedy for treating skin disorders, along with helping in cutting down fat too. Replace a cup of normal tea or coffee, with a cup of herbal tea, and start noticing a difference within a week itself.

Eat: Vegetables, Fruits, Anything that is not Junk
You may have tried a gamut of face creams and cosmetic products, however, there is no substitute to the vitamins you get from eating fruits and vegetables. Eating a bowl of fruits on a daily basis will make your skin glow like none other. On the other hand, including lots of green leafy vegetables can go a long way towards giving you that clear complexion you always wanted. Among foods to eat for clear skin, there is always a mention of cereals. Instead of having a burger in breakfast, go for a bowl of cereal and milk. Even better, team it up with brown bread. Not only would it help you include vitamins and proteins in your meal, but would also help you shed those extra pounds that make you look unhealthy. As an important clear skin tip, there is one thing I need to say – stop surviving on junk food. The saturated fats and the oil they have will wash away all your efforts of maintaining a clear and healthy skin.

Apply: Moisturizers, Sunscreens, Massage Oils
Here comes your favorite section, beauty products! Well, to start with, always keep your skin hydrated by applying a moisturizer. A face moisturizer need not be an expensive one – you could always use natural face moisturizers to hydrate your skin. Skin that is dry most of the time soon loses all its sheen, and automatically looks unhealthy. What’s more, in order to sustain that clarity and glow on your skin, NEVER step out of your house without applying a sunscreen lotion. Experts state that the best way to maintain the health and clarity of your skin is to apply a sunscreen, whether or not you step out in the sun. It will remove all the tanned and dead cells from your skin, and prevent them from any further damage from the sun. In addition, whenever you get time at home, massage your skin with olive oil or jojoba oil, which will naturally get you a glowing skin by keeping it moisturized, wrinkle-free, and youthful.

Avoid: Cigarettes, Alcohol, Stress
It is high time you gave up on smoking and drinking, for they have toxins that automatically affect healthy blood circulation in your body, leading it to deteriorate. Excessive smoking will damage your skin cells, create dark-circles under your eyes, and make you look much older than you actually are. Clear, youthful skin will soon be a thing of the past. Needless to mention, alcohol has its own set of effects on skin – acne eruptions being the most common. Forget a healthy skin if you cannot give up on drinking. Moreover, it is medically proven that stress and depression aggravate every skin problem that you can think of! It makes your body vulnerable to diseases, and undermines your mind, emotions, soul, and also your skin.

The above mentioned ways will only give you a nudge in the right direction. It is, eventually, up to you to decide what to give up. A glowing skin or alcohol? As though life is not fraught with enough problems, there is more to add in the name of skin problems. Jealousy, anger, and frustration come handy. It is a tough world out there, and it just gets tougher. In the meanwhile, stay happy, feel like a supermodel, and experience the beauty within you. Forever. A clear and healthy skin is just a bonus!
